Fitting a Wide Dynamic Range of Speech into a Narrow Dynamic Range of Hearing

چکیده

range—from below the normal threshold of hearing to above the normal level of discomfort or even pain. Most of the time, people with normal hearing can arrange things so that sounds are between their threshold and discomfort levels. This becomes difficult to achieve for people with hearing loss; the difficulty in achieving it increases with the size of the loss. There is an obvious need for hearing aids to employ some form or forms of dynamic range compression to make as many sounds as possible audible and comfortable. This problem is commonly viewed in the following way, although it is not necessarily laid out in these discrete steps:

Adaptive Dynamic Range Optimization for Hearing Aids

Clinical trials of the adaptive dynamic range optimization (ADRO) amplifier show that it produces more comfortable sound, higher speech recognition in quiet at low input levels, higher speech recognition in background noise, and improved sound quality relative to conventional wide dynamic range compression (WDRC) hearing aids. Instead of attempting to compress a wide range of input sounds into ...

Determination of the size distribution of monodesperse and bidisperse mixtures of spherical particles in the nanometer and submicron size range by applying cumulant analysis and contin algorithm in dynamic light scattering

Determination of particle size is one of the major needs in the industry and biotechnology. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) is a widely used technique for determining size distribution of spherical particle in nanometer and submicron size range. In this method, there are different algorithms for determining the size and size distribution of particles, which are selected according to the required...

An adaptive envelope compression strategy for speech processing in cochlear implants

Hearing-impaired patients have limited hearing dynamic range for speech perception, which partially accounts for their poor speech understanding abilities, particularly in noise. Wide dynamic range compression aims to compress speech signal into the usable hearing dynamic range of hearing-impaired listeners; however, it normally uses a static compression based strategy. This work proposed a str...

A multichannel compression strategy for a digital hearing aid

Multi-channel compression schemes are a practical method of mapping the wide dynamic range of speech signals into the reduced dynamic range of hearing impaired listeners. These systems address two of the shortcomings of single-channel compression systems: (1) the reduction of gain as a result of narrow-band non-speech stimuli and (2) the reduction of gain that often occurs when high-frequency s...

Preferred Compression Threshold and Release Time in Quiet and Noisy Conditions for Elderly Korean Hearing Aid Users

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Listeners with sensorineural hearing loss want to compensate for their narrow dynamic range from appropriate compression functions of hearing aids. The present study aimed to determine which compression threshold and release time of nonlinear hearing aids might affect speech recognition and speech quality judgments. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Ten elderly listeners with sym...
